Personal branding: Prodigal Khumalo, ultra-distance athlete

Prodigal Khumalo is a 39 year-old ultra distance runner based in Durban. Equally accomplished on road and trail, Prodigal says: “I run on the road to see how far I can push my body, and I run on the trails to enjoy life.”

Prodigal is a two times gold medallist at Comrades (2014, 2017), and has won the Ultra-trail Cape Town (UTCT) 100km twice (2016, 2017). He is the current record holder for the event.

Despite a lack of races such as Comrades, Prodigal has had a busy and focused year in 2021. In January he ran 100kms in 7hrs27mins, from Hilton to Durban, as a fund-raiser for Orcas Running Academy, an academy he founded to coach and support young runners in the Durban area.

In April 2021 Prodigal won the 32km Ultra-trail Drakensberg, and was invited to take part in the Nedbank Runified 50km World Record challenge in Gqeberha in May, where he achieved a time of 3:05:57. In August 2021 he ran the 103km Icons Journey Marathon in the Eastern Cape in support of a group of runners raising funds for charity. In September 2021 he came second in the Karkloof Trail Series 50 Miler.

We are working with Prodigal to do some brand-building PR and have secured TV, Radio, Print and online coverage for him.
