Personal Branding: Ryan Stramrood, WOWSA Award nomination

Maintaining a media presence is a valuable part of building and maintaining a personal brand. In January 2021, Ryan Stramrood, extreme swimmer and inspirational speaker, was nominated for an international open water swimming award, and Maryann Shaw Communications used the nomination to do some further brand-building PR for Ryan.

We secured a series of broadcast opportunities that included SABC TV, on the Afrikaans and English News, ETV Sports news, and the Expresso Show breakfast show, where Ryan was interviewed but also featured in their food and exercise segments. On radio, Ryan was interviewed on Cape Talk, SAFM, Hot91.9 FM, and Metro FM. During and after the broadcast features and interviews, there were notable spikes in Ryan’s Instagram following.

He featured in print in the Cape’s regional newspapers The Cape Times and Die Burger, as well as on the cover and inside the community newspaper People’s Post. The press release was published online in a range of media, and shared widely on social media.

Having a clear and visible personal brand plays a vital role in staying top of mind with your target audience. Whether its gaining media exposure for existing sponsors or attracting new sponsors, or increasing the visibility of your company or organisation by profiling their leaders, personal branding PR is always a worthwhile investment.
